Guardians of the Galaxy Reveals Which Marvel Hero Destroyed His Own Planet

Marvel’s very own He-Man has stepped into the spotlight to finally reveal his origin and how he blew up his own planet.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1, available now from Marvel.

The Marvel Universe is no stranger to tragedy, and the heroes who comprise the Guardians of the Galaxy know that as well as anyone. Each of them have suffered their own sorts of traumas and losses, and have shared more than a few as a team. As bad as some of the lives the Guardians have lived might be, none of them are as tragic as their newest potential recruit, and the Prince of Power has a lot of explaining to do when it comes to how exactly he blew up his own planet.

When the Prince of Power comes crashing through the roof of the alien bar that the Guardians’ own Hercules just happens to be relaxing in, there is clearly already a story to be told. Things became a bit more clear when the goons of fungal crime lord Cordyceps Jones arrive, yet the Prince still manage to take the phrase “start at the beginning” far too literally. While he and Hercules battle his assailants, the Prince recounts his entire life story to the Olympian, beginning with his birth as Prince Otherone on the planet Muscula. It was there that Otherone became the champion that he is today, as well as where every suspicion of him being Marvel’s most ridiculous He-Man parody was confirmed.

The Prince of Power was sadly brought into this world as little more than a precautionary measure, just in case any grave fate should befall his brother Majestar. In infancy, the Majestar was imbued with a brilliant magic, one that didn’t take when it came to Otherone. As such the two grew up leading vastly different lives. While Majestar was invoking the Power of Noblor to face off against a bright green Skeletor knock-off, Otherone was stuck sorting paper clips in a never ending bureaucracy. At least, he was until the day he got his powers as he reveals in Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1 by Al Ewing, Flaviano, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC’s Cory Petit.

The explanation that the Prince of Power had given back in 2020’s Guardians of the Galaxy #4 by Al Ewing and Juan Cabal turned out to in fact be a lie. There was never a wizard who gave Otherone his powers, but rather a shiny purple rock that he found in his jelly beans and decided to eat anyway. As fate would have it, that rock was nothing other than the Power Stone itself, and with its energy coursing through his veins Prince Otherone was transformed. Not only could he now stand side by side with his brother on the battlefield, he could even put an end to the long running feud between his family’s kingdom and that of the evil Rapskullian.

Unfortunately, combining his newfound abilities with those of Majestar’s blade to eradicate evil from his home world once and for all meant disrupting its delicate balance between dualities, and the planet exploded beneath Otherone’s feet. It was only thanks to his powers that he survived floating through the void of space until he was found by Blackjack O’Hare, but in the time since then he has still failed to find his footing in the universe. After realizing just what Otherone is capable of, as well as how genuinely he wants to do something great with his life, Hercules offers to take the young hero under his wing. Under any other circumstances, it would be another heartfelt moment among the chaos of the Marvel Universe. Under those of Infinite Destinies, however, this stands to be something much more than that.

The Prince of Power isn’t just another host to one of the Infinity Stones, he is the only one of them so far with purely good intentions regarding its use. Otherone is neither greedy nor lusting for more power, he only wants to do the best he can and maybe gain some recognition for his bravery along the way. With Hercules as his mentor, there is no doubt that the Power Stone is in good hands, and with both Black Cat and Nighthawk hunting it for their own less than heroic purposes that has never been more important.
