Guardian names Betsy Reed, The Intercept’s top editor, to run its U.S. newsroom.

Betsy Reed, the editor in chief of The Intercept, has been tapped to be the head editor of The Guardian’s U.S. newsroom, the British news organization said Thursday.

Ms. Reed has steered The Intercept, a newsroom that specializes in investigative journalism on topics including national security and criminal justice, since 2015. Before she joined The Intercept, Ms. Reed was executive editor of The Nation.

Katharine Viner, the editor in chief at Guardian News & Media, described Ms. Reed as “one of America’s foremost and experienced editors” in a statement.

“With Betsy joining to lead our U.S. efforts, and with over 1 million paying supporters around the world, I feel very optimistic about the prospects for Guardian U.S.,” Ms. Viner said in the statement.

Ms. Reed will replace John Mulholland sometime in the fall, a spokeswoman for The Guardian said.

The Intercept said it was promoting Roger Hodge, The Intercept’s deputy editor, to succeed Ms. Reed. Nausicaa Renner, Washington editor at The Intercept, will become deputy editor.

While at The Intercept, Ms. Reed oversaw investigative journalism that won prizes including the George Polk Award, National Magazine Awards and the Sidney Hillman Prize. The Intercept was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist last year for the podcast “Somebody,” an investigation into the murder of a young Black man in Chicago.
