Group of Manchester United players make plea to club hierarchy over transfers
Just two games into the new campaign and things feel pretty desperate at Old Trafford after an opening weekend defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford and a 4-0 hammering at Brentford on Saturday.
Despite countless links to players during the transfer window, new manager Erik ten Hag has only welcomed three new signings: Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez.
Reinforcements appear to be needed across the pitch and now a number of the biggest names at Old Trafford are trying to encourage the board into action.
The Mirror reports that a group of senior players including Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes, have spoken to club officials and made it clear that new arrivals are needed.
Presumably none of those players think that they themselves should be replaced by new signings, but they do believe that not enough has been done in the transfer market to support Ten Hag in his rebuilding job.
United clearly needed improvements after their consistently poor performances last season, and they let the likes of Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic go over the summer, so the squad was trimmed.
It seems certain that the dissenting group will get their wish and United will bring in more players before the transfer window, but the question will be whether the new arrivals will improve the situation or not.
Adrien Rabiot looks likely to join from Juventus, while the Red Devils have been linked with a string of forwards, from exciting youngsters like Ajax’s Antony to underwhelming veterans like Bologna’s Marko Arnautovic.
Ten Hag has reportedly made the same plea for new signings that his players have made, but it will be the quality not quantity of the arrivals that is key.
