Greg, Debra, Chad, and Carolyn are in the top baby names that could go extinct
No matter how much you deliberate over the perfect name for your baby, it’s likely your choice will be influenced by societal trends.
From pop culture names (like Arya and Kylo) to talked-about themes (like astrology and houseplants) rising in popularity, it seems we all have a tendency to move with the times – and that works the other way, too.
Some names fall out of favour over the years, and a new report has revealed the monikers that may be consigned to the history books.
The research, by Pregnacare by Vitabiotics, looked at the movers and shakers in this year’s ONS baby names ranking, finding out the top endangered names that may go extinct by 2023.
Experts analysed government data from 1996 to 2022 to identify trends and make predictions, with those that saw less than three births last year deemed to be at risk.
Traditional names like Walt and Carolyn were highest on the danger list, with surprising entries in the form of staples like Greg and Debra.
It’s not guaranteed these names will be for the scrapheap, as even the long-maligned Gary has made a comeback. What it does mean, though, is that your child is unlikely to have the same name as the rest of their class if they’re called Neville or Meryl.
Here are the top 40 endangered baby names, for girls and boys.
