Greenwich has the most pupils per primary school in south east London – full figures

Greenwich has the most pupils per primary school in south east London over the next academic year, new research shows.

Ahead of the primary school application deadline on Sunday (January 15), research has revealed that Greenwich is the eighth most squeezed locations in England for primary school places in 2023/24, with competition for places likely to be competitive amongst parents.

Research from education software specialist, The Access Group, found that out of the 77 schools within Greenwich, there are approximately 3,852 children moving up to primary education in the next academic year, which is roughly 50 children per school.

The Access Group previously found that the average infant school class size in 2022 was 26.7 – meaning a two-form intake would be between 53-54 people.

Slough has been rated the most squeezed area in the whole of England – out of the 38 schools in the area, there are an average of 2,339 children set to begin primary school in 2023/24, which is roughly 60 children per school.

England’s smallest historic county, Rutland, offers the best access to primary school places, with just 309 children entering each of the region’s 24 schools next year- this equates to 13 per school.
