Great’s stinging ultimatum to $750k Lions star

The Brisbane Lions can not win a premiership while Joe Daniher continues to play with “low footy IQ”, AFL great Nathan Brown believes.

Speaking on Nine’s AFL Sunday Footy Show, Brown said the 28-year-old’s career somewhat resembles the early part of Jack Riewoldt’s career before he made a change which took him to the top of the AFL.

Brisbane was knocked out of the premiership race in a big loss to Geelong on Friday.

“I still think (the Lions) are in the premiership window … he’s a wonderfully talented player, Joe Daniher, but while he plays like this, with low footy IQ, I don’t think they can win a premiership,” Brown said.

Geelong score scrappy end-to-end goal

Daniher – who joined Brisbane from Essendon on a deal said to be worth around $750,000 a season – had just 14 disposals in the Lions’ 71-point thrashing at the hands of the Cats at the MCG.

He kicked just the one behind, took six marks and had 11 kicks. In the second quarter he had just one disposal.

“If I’m Joe Daniher’s coaching staff, I’m saying ‘ring up Jack Riewoldt and ask how he changed’ because Jack Riewoldt in the early part of his career, was a similar type of player,” Brown said.

“Jack Riewoldt changed and he became a better player, a defensive player.

“(Daniher) wanted the ball delivered to him 120 metres away the other night, he was arguing with the umpires … if he doesn’t change they can’t win a flag.”

Matthew Lloyd said coach Chris Fagan had a role to play in helping Daniher, and that his performance on Friday night was also far from his best.

He said the Lions need to look for staff to complement Fagan’s strengths.

“I think Chris is one of the great man managers. You don’t need to be everything as a senior coach, but you surround yourself with what you maybe lack,” he said.

“He’s not as strategic as a Chris Scott for example, but you can surround yourself with people who aren’t man managers like Chris Fagan. So that’s what I’d be going after.”
