Great road trips for a themed family staycation – from Harry Potter to royal residences

Road trips and staycations have been the summer holidays of choice for most Britons this year. Going on a UK holiday and exploring the country has delighted families all summer.

King’s Cross and its platform nine and three quarter, as well as Warner Brothers Harry Potter studios are obvious stops in London.

Not to be missed, Hogwarts’ great hall and library, or the real life Christchurch College and Bodleian Library in Oxford.

A stop at Diagon Alley, or The Shambles in York will set the entire family nicely before the drive to Edinburgh, the city where the books were written.

Period dramas are always very popular, and a road trip to check some of the country houses featured in films and TV series could be a great way to go off the beaten track.

DON’T MISS

The route is 404 miles and starts in London, where Bridgerton’s family home, Ranger’s House, is located.

Next, it’s a stop at Downtown Abbey, filmed at Highclere Castle in Newbury, Hampshire.

Britons can then go on to Frome in Somerset to visit Orchardleigh House, the filming location for 2006 BBC series Tess of the D’Urbervilles.

After a stop at the house of Thomas Shelby from Peaky Blinders, located at Arley Hall in Cheshire, road tripping Britons will head to famous Chatsworth House, near Bakewell in Derbyshire.

Chatsworth was featured in films such as Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre.

A royal palaces tour will be the perfect road trip for lovers of glitz and glamour.

Over 160 miles, the road trip will take Britons from London to Sandringham, via Windsor.

London has many current and former royal residences, and holidaying Britons will be spoiled for choice.

From the Tower of London, which is the oldest royal castle in the country and Buckingham Palace to Hampton Court and Kensington Palace.

Windsor Castle is close to London and easily accessible as a next stop before a trip up to Norfolk for a look at Sandringham Estate.

Three fantastic road trips for the family:

1. Harry Potter Route: London, Oxford, York, Edinburgh – 449 miles

2. Period Dramas Route: Greenwich, Hampshire, Frome, Cheshire, Bakewell – 404 miles
