Great British Sewing Bee’s ‘coat massacre 2022’

The Transformation Challenge on this week’s Great British Sewing Bee saw 18 old coats given a new lease of life. The amount of fabric scraps on the floor caused presenter Sara Pascoe, 40, to exclaim: “This the coat massacre of 2022!”

It was one design in particular that caught the judges’ eyes. Annie, 32, a fashion buyer from Surrey said: “I got the leopard print inspired by my own outfit. It’s a bit Pat Butcher to be honest.”

The coat-based Transformation Challenge was to incorporate two garments into one, by combining key features of both coats into the final product. It was all part of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Week.

It was a show that celebrated sustainability and saw sewers upcycle their way through various sartorial-based challenges. Fans were quick to react on social.

In anticipation of upcycling duvet covers, Lily Fae tweeted: “I’ve even got a duvet set ready to upcycle!”

Johanna Sahi-Proto tweeted: “My favourite episode always in the series! There should be a whole series on reusing and upcycling textiles.”

Carys Pape tweeted: “I cannot wait for this episode. This is literally the model for my small business!”

Eliza Eaton-Stern tweeted: “They showed a piece highlighting the quilts of Gee’s Bend, Alabama and the brilliance and ingenuity of black women and their art. Love seeing this highlighted on Great British Sewing Bee! #GBSB”
