Grave fears over Indian star’s World Cup chances

India is sweating over scans on star paceman Jasprit Bumrah’s back amid fears that he could miss the upcoming T20 World Cup with a stress fracture.

Bumrah missed last month’s Asia Cup due to injury but returned for India’s T20 series against Australia, playing in two out of the three matches in the series.

According to a BCCI statement, Bumrah “complained of back pain” during a training session ahead of India’s series against South Africa which followed the two matches against Australia.

While it is unclear exactly how long Bumrah will be sidelined with the back issue, reports from Indian outlet PTI suggest the 28-year-old “could be out for a period of six months” with a “stress fracture”.

A stress fracture in the back would be Bumrah’s second in the space of three years after he was sidelined for three months with a similar ailment in 2019.

Bumrah, India’s most prolific paceman in all three formats, will have until October 15 to prove his fitness for the World Cup.

The absence of Bumrah would be a massive blow to India’s chances, particularly when coupled with that of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury.

India’s World Cup campaign will get underway on October 23 with a clash against arch-rivals Pakistan at the MCG.
