Grandparents could boost their state pension through childcare – are you eligible?

It is common for people to rely on the help of family members such as grandparents to care for a child, especially for parents who work. Through the Specified Adult Childcare credits, pensioners could increase the amount of state pension they receive by caring for a child.

These National Insurance (NI) credits were introduced from April 2011 and are available to grandparents, or other family members, who have cared for a child under the age of 12.

An application must be made to receive the NI credits, and claims can be backdated all the way back to April 6, 2011.

What are the benefits?

By claiming Specified Adult Childcare credits, people can help build up their National Insurance contributions.

A minimum of 10 years of NI contributions are required to get any state pension.
