Grand final venue clearer as Brisbane buckles down

The NRL grand final appears likely to stay at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, after Queensland recorded just one new local case of COVID-19 today.

Health minister Yvette D’Ath confirmed the new case is a fully vaccinated close contact of an aviation worker who had previously tested positive.

Nine’s Danny Weidler said this morning that the NRL remains confident the grand final is still on track to be played in Brisbane.

ARLC boss Peter V’landys confirmed yesterday that the match would be moved to Townsville if south-east Queensland was placed in lockdown.

But the state’s chief health officer, Dr Jeannette Young, believes that’s not necessary at this stage.

“I can’t say I’m comfortable, I’m watching this very, very carefully, because Queenslanders have done such a fantastic job with our last few outbreaks … at the moment I’m prepared to wait and see if we’ve got any local transmission,” she said.

“At the moment, all of these cases are linked, we know exactly how they’ve got them.”

Dr Young did urge caution however, again warning she wouldn’t hesitate to place the region into lockdown should circumstances change.

“If we see large numbers, if we see spread, and definitely if we start seeing unlinked cases that I can’t say where they’ve come from,” she explained.
