Graham Norton breaks silence after marrying filmmaker

Graham Norton married filmmaker Jonathan McLeod in a private ceremony in Ireland last July, and has now given a rare insight on the star-studded ceremony in the run-up to their first anniversary.

The 60-year-old revealed to The Guardian that his wedding speech had a bit more morbidity than many may expect.

He shared: “I had a joke in my speech: the vows are much more manageable. ‘Till death do us part’ seems more achievable at our age.”

Candidly speaking about his own mortality as he tied the knot with the filmmaker, who is 15 years his junior: “We only have to put up with each other for a couple of decades. And then I’ll be out of here.”

The BBC star has spent decades living in the global spotlight, getting years of experience on how to keep some things, like his relationships, far from the public eye, leaving fans shocked when he revealed he had tied the knot in July last year.

The couple first met each other six years ago, making their public debut together in December 2019.

Their private wedding was held in West Cork, Ireland, with a star-studded list of 120 attendees.

Graham revealed the venue was inspired by his 90-year-old mother Rhonda Walker, as “she wouldn’t have been well enough to come to London”.

The lavish do at Bantry House reportedly had performances from music icon Lulu and drag queen DJ Panti Bliss.

Just a few months after shocking fans with his wedding news, Graham told the Daily Mail: “I’m from that generation of gays who assumed it was never going to be on the cards.

“So, one, it’s extraordinary that it can happen, I mean, I never gave up hope of finding the one. If it was a surprise, it was a pleasant surprise.”

As for being an older groom, the BBC star is eager to find new things to start in his later years, yet another aspect inspired by his mum.

He shared with The Guardian, referring to his newfound career as an author: “I loved waking up at 52 being a debut something.

“I have just turned 60; my mum is 91. That’s 30 years. It’s a long time to coast. Starting the writing just reminded me, you’re not dead yet.”
