Govt allows Gujarat schools to change timings due to cold wave – Times of India

A day after an eighth standard girl died after suffering from cardiac arrest due to severe cold in a Rajkot school, the state government on Wednesday allowed schools to change timings as they choose.
On Wednesday, Rushikesh Patel the minister of Higher and Technical Education and state government spokesperson told media persons at Gandhinagar that due to prevailing cold wave situation in the state, schools have been allowed to change timings and principals can delay the morning school timings.
Following this, the district education officer of Ahmedabad city issued a circular informing the schools of the decision. Sources said that most primary schools are likely to change school timings.
Sources said that the school principals’ association had also represented to the DPEO to allow them to change school timings so that children don’t have to commute so early in the morning in cold weather.
“The schools that have morning shifts have been allowed to change timings. The schools have been informed about the decision,” said an official of the Ahmedabad DEO’s office.
Sources said that most primary schools have morning shifts that begin from 7.30am when the weather is very cold. These schools are likely to delay the timing by half an hour or by an hour, sources said.
Schools asked not to insist on uniform woollens
The state government also asked schools not to insist on students to wear only woollens that are part of their uniforms and to allow them to wear any other winter wear that is not part of their uniforms. The state government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel informed the media persons during cabinet meeting briefing on Wednesday that the schools should relax the uniform rules so that students can wear any winter clothes they have to protect themselves from severe cold. The state director of primary education also issued a circular to inform the school administrations of the decision.
