Thomas Doherty is no stranger to steamy scenes. But one stands out and you’ll never guess who it was with.
Thomas Doherty is Max Wolfe on the reincarnated Gossip Girl – a 17-year-old romantic omnivore, shall we say, who seduces all the boys and girls at his Upper East Side high school.
But the former Disney star is fairly blase about the steamy scenes and people with whom his on-screen alter-ego has been entangled.
They’re nothing new to the 26-year-old, who even boasts a dalliance with a real-life Dame on his already impressive resume.
“I’m fine with it,” Doherty says.
“Everything I have done thus far I have had to do at least a kissing scene. I did Catherine the Great and had an intimate scene with Helen Mirren.
“Obviously, you do think, ‘It’s Dame Helen Mirren!’ But she was so down-to-earth, so funny, such a pro and so talented.”
After a nine-year hiatus, Gossip Girl has been brought out of retirement to captivate audiences once more with salacious stories.
Only these days, Gossip Girl (again voiced by Kristen Bell – the only original character back) is an Instagram troll rather than a blogger. And the stakes are far higher for her victims, because Instagram has put high-school students on the world stage.
The new series delves deeply into the dark side of social media … and Doherty admits he tries to avoid reading replies to his own posts.
“Sometimes I will within the first hour,” he shares.
“People are always like, ‘Say hi. It’s me, I love you!’ so I make a conscious effort to like them or say hi because most fans are amazing and so supportive.”
As with the original iteration, fashion is as fierce as schoolyard rivalries, so what’s Doherty’s relationship with clothes?
“I wear them,” he says. “I don’t know if I care for them too much, but I do like clothes.
“There’s too many clothes now. It’s hard to keep up but what I really love right now is what Harry Styles is wearing.”
Among his cast of previously unknown 20-something co-stars, Doherty has been in the business the longest, and is perhaps the most recognisable actor in the group because of his days as a Disney Channel star on The Descendants.
Unlike other teen stars, he hasn’t found the transition to adult roles difficult.
“Being from Britain, where Disney Channel isn’t as much of a big thing, it was almost like I had the foresight to treat it as a job and be smart about not being too associated with it,” Doherty shares.
“But that time was such a blessing. It gave me an incredible platform and so much experience. It was almost as an apprenticeship for the rest of my career.”
While his profile has exploded thanks to Gossip Girl, fans can’t always put the right name to the famous face.
“I always get mistaken for Richard Madden,” Doherty shares, with a laugh.
“It’s so embarrassing. It first happened when I was in a Starbucks in Burbank and a girl was like, ‘Oh my God! Are you who I think you are?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, it’s me.’
“She was like, ‘Can I get a photo?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, of course you can.’
“I was doing the whole thing and getting a photo and then she said how she l loved me in Game Of Thrones! I didn’t know whether to say, ‘Wait, no, that’s not me!’
“It was so embarrassing that in the end I just decided to be Richard Madden (laughs).”
