Golf teacher Michael Block dunks hole in one in front of Rory McIlroy

Club pro Michael Block hit an incredible slam-dunk hole-in-one during the final round of the PGA Championship alongside Rory McIlroy on a fairytale weekend, sending the Oak Hill crowd into pandemonium. The 46-year-old is the head pro at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in California, and he also teaches lessons for £100.

He is one of 20 club pros in the field, and after beating all odds to reach the final round and being tied in 8th, Block was paired with world No3 McIlroy, who is searching to end a nine-year major drought. “That should be fun. We’re going to have a good time,” Block said on playing alongside McIlroy.

And his prediction came true as he produced one of the most incredible moments, hitting an astonishing slam-dunk hole-in-one on the 15th hole. “Rory, did it go in?,” Block said to McIlroy before embracing each other while the crowd went wild.

The crowd gave Block an even bigger pop as he walked to the green to pick his ball out of the hole, reaffirming himself as a fan favourite at Oak Hill. Apart from adding an iconic shot to his golf highlight reel, there’s plenty more up for grabs for Block.

A top-four finish is worth an invite to next year’s Masters. But should that prove to be too far out of Block’s reach, a top-15 would earn him another invite to the PGA Championship. A two-way tie for third would be worth a special temporary membership on the PGA Tour for Block – something fans are now calling for regardless of Sunday’s finish.

“I feel like I’ve got the game this week to compete, to tell you the truth,” he said earlier this week. “I’ve made the cut, which is obviously, like I told you, a huge goal. I feel like I could shoot even par out here every day. I feel like at the end of the four days that that might be a pretty good result.”

“Give him a tour card honestly,” a fan said after Block’s incredible hole-in-one. “Could your club pro make an ace, on the Sunday of a Major, playing alongside Rory McIlroy? Take a bow Michael Block,” another said.

Block is playing in his fifth PGA Championship but had never made the cut before this week. And his shot lifted him to 13th. In an epic moment, Block held his scorecard up to a TV camera as he marked it with a one.
