Trailers for Agent 64 and the System Shock remake were the highlights of the PC Gaming Show, though neither have exact release dates.
Disappointed by the lack of the rumoured GoldenEye 007 remaster/remake at the Xbox showcase? Well, the PC Gaming Show had you covered with a brand new game very clearly inspired by the beloved James Bond title.
Aside from being a first person shooter involving spies and espionage, Agent 64: Spies Never Die’s deliberately old school visuals evoke the 90s and it even has the same style of character models as GoldenEye.
As if it couldn’t be any more blatant, the trailer ends with in-game footage of the player character turning on what looks like a Nintendo 64 and putting in a game cartridge. Technically, its not actually a Nintendo console but that’s obviously what it’s trying to emulate.
You play as the titular Agent 64 (who looks more like Sean Connery than Pierce Brosnan) and each mission drops you into a self-contained environment, where you complete various objectives (hacking terminals, stealing files, etc.) while engaging in shootouts.
Agent 64 is slated to release for PC later this year, although it will be an early access game. At first, it will have three story missions and multiple difficulty options which add more objectives to complete.
The final version will have a full single-player campaign, but developer Replicant D6 bluntly admits that it will be more expensive to purchase than the early access version.
No prices have been shared yet, but a demo is already available and can be downloaded via the game’s Steam page.
The other big announcement of the show was a new trailer for the System Shock remake. Plans for such a project were announced all the way back in 2015, but it looks like it’s finally close to release.
If you’re unfamiliar with the original, it’s a first person adventure game where you play as a hacker and must thwart the malevolent AI SHODAN, who fans will tell you is the real star of the show.
Developer Nightdive Studios (which also released an enhanced version of the original game) has been working closely with members of the original System Shock team and has even got back SHODAN’s voice actress Terri Brosius to reprise her role.
Unfortunately, the game still lacks a release date. On the plus side, a demo is available across Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store as well as pre-orders. Nightdive Studios has also confirmed that the game will come to PlayStation and Xbox platforms.
It’s faring a lot better than System Shock 3, a new sequel that is in development at OtherSide Entertainment. It was announced in 2015 as well, but the studio hasn’t said a word on the project since 2019.
The last thing anyone has heard about it was per a 2020 report that said development had been shelved due to multiple members of the development team either leaving or being laid off.
Real-time strategy game Stormgate, which was first seen during Summer Game Fest showcase, made an appearance as well and offered some very brief glimpses oft gameplay, as well as a promise by Frost Giant Studios that it won’t be pay-to-win or feature NFTs (yes, the latter has now become a selling point).
Also, while no sequel for Half-Life: Alyx has been announced yet, a pair of modders are putting together their own campaign expansion entitled Half-Life Alyx: Levitation, which closed out the PC Gaming Show.
You can check out seven minutes of gameplay below and, as you can see, it could easily pass as something Valve put together. It’ll be free to download and is expected to launch this year.
