GMB’s Ukraine reporter forced to seek cover live on TV amid air raid sirens
A Good Morning Britain reporter was forced to quickly end his report from Ukraine and put on personal protective equipment before seeking safety live on air while reporting from Ukraine.
Reporter Richard Gaisford had been on the scene in Kyiv, which had been targeted by overnight bombing raids by Russian forces, where he updated hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard on the situation on the ground.
During his report on Friday morning, air raid sirens began to ring out in the streets behind him, leading Kate to ask: ‘Richard, when we hear those air raid sirens, I know our viewers worry for you – are you safe?
‘Should you be running to take shelter? What precautions have you taken?’
As air raid sirens wailed behind him, Richard told her: ‘Yeah, we have taken quite a number of precautions.
‘I don’t want to go too deeply into them but we have got our – in fact it’s just being passed to me now – our personal protective equipment to put on, I can put that on. We also have vests, should the need arise.’
Richard was seen strapping a helmet onto his head after being passed it by someone off-camera, as he continued his broadcast.
He added: ‘Ben and Kate, it is a tricky time for many in the city who don’t have this kind of equipment to hand and as I look out now, there are still people in the street and walking their dogs, trying to lead a normal life.’
Worrying whether Richard should be leaving the area, Kate told him: ‘We’re going to let you get to safety Richard and we’ll come back.’
Clearly flustered by the moment, Richard left the screen as he told them: ‘Let me get myself, let me get… sure, ok.’
Thankfully, Richard was later seen with his helmet and bulletproof vest on as the programme continued.
Russia began its attack on Ukraine on Thursday and the country reported 137 civilian and military casualties on Friday as bombing raids took place near Kyiv overnight.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
