Martin Lewis had an interesting choice of words after a journalist appeared to criticise suggestions on how to save money amid the cost of living crisis.

Prime Minister Liz Truss recently ruled out a £15 million energy-saving campaign, because it was seen as a ‘light touch’.

Ms Truss made the decision that despite warnings, planned blackouts could hit the UK if power plants cannot get enough gas to keep running.

During Monday’s Good Morning Britain, hosts Martin and Susanna Reid were joined by former politician Edwina Currie and journalist Ella Whelan discussed the PM’s latest move.

‘If you’re a working-class family looking at the kind of bills heading towards you, you would know how to save energy, you know how to do it,’ said Whelan.

‘I know but to reduce this to “it’s about turning lights off,” there’s a lot of interesting stuff out there,’ Lewis replied.

‘For example, you mentioned showers, there’s a website to save money, save water, where people can find water saving freebies to reduce the amount of water they’re using.’

However, Whelan quickly remarked: ‘What a miserable existence, what do you want us to do, huddle around a cold fire?’

Lewis, who was slightly taken aback by the quip, and insisted the concept wasn’t an ‘insensible thing.’

‘It’s good for the environment, it’s good for water usage,’ Lewis responded.

‘We have some problems, we can try them for free and people can try them and see if they like them, but to poo poo them out of hand, I’m afraid you’re encouraging people to have a more miserable existence by doing it from scratch.

He continued: ‘I totally agree with your concept that we need to do more in the future, but when you come down on the back and you poo poo every single idea….’

The financial broadcaster later asked Whelan if it’s quicker to cook a jacket potato in the microwave or in the oven, which Whelan dismissed.

‘Look Martin, I’ve got a baby on the way, arriving tomorrow and I’m just talking about people’s priorities. My priority is going to be, am I going to keep that kid warm in a drafty house that I live in.

‘I’m not poo pooing stuff, I’m just saying people have to have a certain standard of living, and also have a future of where that standard of living is going to get better.

‘All I’m saying is that the government and the Labour Party, and pretty much everyone in government, has let go of that aspiration.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
