GM plans $632M upgrade in Ft. Wayne, Ind., for future large pickups

Fort Wayne Assembly, in Roanoke, Ind., builds the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. The investment will be put toward new tooling, equipment and conveyors in both body and general assembly locations.

GM said it has committed close to $2 billion at Fort Wayne Assembly and more than $2.8 billion at manufacturing sites in Indiana since 2013, as well as more than $31.6 billion across its U.S. manufacturing and parts distribution footprint.

“When business is booming as it has been for the past decade — due to the hard work of UAW members — the company should continue to invest in its workforce,” UAW Vice President Mike Booth, who leads the union’s GM department, said in GM’s statement.

On June 5, GM said it planned to spend $788 million at Flint Assembly in Michigan and $233 million at the nearby Flint Metal Center, which produces sheet metal stampings, toward production of redesigned heavy-duty pickups. A day later, the automaker committed 280 million Canadian dollars ($209 million) at its Oshawa Assembly plant in Ontario, which makes light- and heavy-duty Silverados.

GM on Thursday said it intends to invest more than $500 million at Arlington Assembly in Texas to build future versions of its popular full-size SUVs, including the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade-V.
