Globe sees robust growth in prepaid fiber internet subscriber base
MANILA -Globe Telecom aims to enlist at least 200,000 prepaid fiber subscribers this year on the back of increasing demand for affordable internet connectivity amid rising consumer prices.
On Thursday, the Ayala-led company launched GFiber Prepaid, which provides low-cost unlimited fiber connection for as low as P299. Its postpaid plan, in comparison, starts at P1,699.
Raymond Policarpio, vice president of Globe At Home brand management, said the telco was developing products such as the prepaid fiber offer to cater to all market segments.
“There is a huge demand for it (prepaid fiber product) given the use cases. It is really the affordability and other barriers that need to be overcome,” he said.
Filipinos and the rest of the world have become more reliant on internet connectivity due to the pandemic as it resulted in hybrid work setup, remote learning and more e-commerce activities, among others.
“Price points are very much at the lower end compared to the usual postpaid execution,” Policarpio added. He said others may find it expensive to subscribe to postpaid offerings, which can create a “digital divide.”
The prepaid fiber product has no lock-in period and can be settled through ‘buy now, pay later’ solutions via GCash.
Globe, prior to this, introduced sachet-sized prepaid fiber connectivity by establishing WiFi hubs where users can connect their devices. The Ayala-led company is tapping sari-sari stores and other community-based commercial spaces for this service.
With this offering, users can have internet access of one hour for P5 and 12 hours for P20. Subscribers can also pay P50 to P500 to have connectivity for three to 30 days.
Earlier, Converge ICT Solutions Inc. also entered the prepaid market with the launch of “Surf2Sawa.” It enables consumers to have unlimited fiber connectivity for as low as P50 (good for one day).
Surf2Sawa currently has nearly 29,000 subscribers. Converge expects to grow this number to 120,000 by the end of the year.
