Glastonbury fans slam Arctic Monkeys for ‘truly s**t’ headline performance
Glastonbury Festival has already had its fair share of drama over the past few days.
On top of Foo Fighters turning up for a surprise set on Friday afternoon, it looked like Arctic Monkeys were not going to play their headline slot after all.
An acute laryngitis diagnosis on Tuesday left fans worrying that singer Alex Turner wouldn’t make his Pyramid Stage appearance, but he played nonetheless late last night.
Unfortunately, he and the rest of the band did not deliver the performance fans were keen to see.
Slamming Turner’s singing style and the band’s choice of songs, one fan wrote on Twitter: “Alex Turner just off the stage after butchering what could of been an iconic Glasto performance.”
Another commented on the way Turner’s voice has changed over the years, saying: “I don’t know why Alex Turner is singing like that but honestly kids, Arctic Monkeys used to be good.”
A third concurred: “To any young’uns watching, we promise Arctic Monkeys used to be the b*****ks before Alex Turner turned into a pretentious prat. #glastonbury2023.”
Another agreed: “Well that set sent me to sleep and I missed the rest of it. What’s happened to Arctic Monkeys?”
One fan posted a clip of the performance from the BBC’s coverage which showed a disgruntled member of the audience yawning through the band’s set. They captioned the video: “Sums it up.”
It wasn’t all bad, though. Many fans enjoyed seeing Turner hit the stage with his signature swagger.
“Arctic Monkeys are quality,” one fan defended. “Turner is obvs playing some stage character and people get wound up by it.”
Another agreed: “Folk have some strange obsession with nostalgia, so think they all should be singing about chippys and bouncers still. And they don’t, so assume it’s s***.” (sic)
Earlier this week Arctic Monkeys released a statement confirming they would be pulling out of their Dublin show following Turner’s diagnosis.
It read: “We are extremely sorry to announce the cancellation of Arctic Monkeys’ show at Marlay Park in Dublin tomorrow. Alex is suffering from acute laryngitis and following medical advice, has been ordered to rest.”
They added: “Alex and the band apologise for the huge disappointment this will inevitably cause to all their Irish fans. Full refunds will be credited back to the ticket purchaser’s account.”
