Giants trade Kadarius Toney to Chiefs for draft picks

Perhaps Kadarius Toney will grow into the superstar wide receiver he occasionally looked like in his rookie season.

But it won’t be for the Giants.

The Giants gave up on their 2021 first-round pick on Thursday, head coach Brian Daboll confirmed, when they dealt the injury-plagued wideout to the Chiefs. The Giants are receiving third- and sixth-round draft picks; the third-round pick is a compensatory pick the Chiefs received after the Bears hired Ryan Poles as their general manager.

Toney has played in just 12 games with the Giants and just two this season. He hurt his right hamstring in camp and missed all three preseason games before playing sparingly in Weeks 1 and 2. He has not dressed for a game since.

“We’re moving on, I wish Kadarius well,” Daboll said at practice Thursday, when he declined to reveal much about the thinking behind the trade apart from, “We just made a decision that we thought was best for the team.”

The Giants’ receiving corps already has been down Sterling Shepard and Kenny Golladay.

Asked if the Giants will try to bring in another receiver, Daboll said: “We’ll see guys. It just happened a few minutes ago.”
