Instant custard? Yes. Instant coffee? If we must. But instant beer? That’s going to take some getting used to.

If you’re a beer connoisseur you might want to look away now, because a German brewery has invented a way to turn a normal glass of water into beer in seconds.

I an invention that sounds almost Biblical, the brewery in east Germany hopes the beer powder will reduce the heavy carbon footprint of beer exports.

All you have to do is put a few spoons of powder into a glass, add water, and give it a stir.

The powder beer is in its last stage of development and is alcohol free – for now. But after two years of research it’s hoped it will be market-ready by the end of 2023.

The beer powder would make water, bottles, crates and kegs obsolete in international beer logistics, reduce weight and fuel consumption.

Stefan Fritsche is the general manager at Klosterbrauerei Neuzelle, the brewery behind the eyebrow raising product. He said: ‘We have calculated that, if we now relate this to Germany, we can save about 3 to 5 percent of the CO2 emissions for Germany alone.

‘And if you look at it globally, that would be about half a percent of CO2 emissions worldwide that we could reduce.’

And Stefan isn’t willing to compromise on quality.

He said: ‘The special thing is that we actually manage to turn this beer powder into a – currently alcohol-free – one-to-one normal monastery beer with the help of normal water.

‘It tastes like a Pilsner. And later it will taste like a Schwarze Abt, like a Bockbier. We want to make virtually everything in powder form.

‘We want the complete beer taste. We have the foam, we already have the beer taste. We want to add the carbon dioxide in powder form. We want to add the alcohol in powder form. We can do all that with powder. And of course it is absolutely fascinating that we have succeeded. For the first time worldwide.’

In a future scenario, breweries worldwide would get a beer powder and add their own water before filling it into bottles. Even powder for the end producer is an option.
