George Russell parties with Jack Grealish and wears Champions League medal
City secured a historic treble at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, with Rodri scoring the all-important goal against Inter Milan in their 1-0 win. The success means that Pep Guardiola’s side have written themselves into the history books, becoming only the second-ever English side to win the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in the same season.
Brit driver Russell was in Istanbul to watch the drama unfold too, with the football lover enjoying a glitzy evening in Turkey. The driver posted a photo on his Twitter beneath the iconic UEFA Champions League logo with the caption: “Such a pleasure attending the Champions League Final with my dad and brother. Good luck Man City and Inter, let the best team win!!”
Although a Wolverhampton Wanderers fan, Russell looked pleased to see City lift the trophy on the night – and he wasted no time in getting in and among the celebrations.
The 25-year-old shared a photo on Instagram of him posing with Grealish, still donning his kit, whilst wearing the Champions League winners’ medal around his neck – captioning the post: “Massive congrats mate, enjoy the moment.”
The England international needed no invitation to soak up the celebrations, being spotted still in his kit at 7.30am on Sunday night – despite his teammates all changing into club-sponsored tracksuits and more comfortable attire.
Despite Grealish’s desire to be the life and soul of the party, he took a moment to reflect upon his journey and the opportunity he was given when the full-time whistle sounded against Inter. The ex-Aston Villa star insisted to BT Sport that he was not pleased with his ‘dead performance’ before holding back the tears when asked how he was feeling.
“This is what you work your whole life for,” he explained. “I’m so happy. I was awful but I don’t care. To win the treble with this group of players is so special. Everyone who knows me knows how much I love football and this is what I have worked for my whole life. Seeing my family in the crowd makes me so emotional. I just said to the manager ‘I want to thank you’. He has put so much faith in me. He is a genius.”
