Geoff Shreeves hints at new role as Sky Sports icon quits after ‘pay cut’ snub
Geoff Shreeves has hinted he could land a new TV role after announcing his shock exit from Sky Sports following 32 years of service with the broadcaster. The reporter, who is synonymous with Sky’s Premier League football coverage for his no-nonsense interviews and pitchside insight, rejected the chance to stay in his current job after reportedly turning down a pay cut as he prepares to bid farewell to the company.
Shreeves bows out from Sky immediately, having joined the British broadcasting giant in 1991, ahead of the new 2023-24 season after it was claimed he was offered a reduction in his salary.
The 58-year-old became a prominent part of their live football coverage over the years and his voice resonated with football fans as he interviewed some of the game’s biggest names, from Sir Alex Ferguson to Jose Mourinho.
But he will now step down from his position after agreeing to leave his role, with Shreeves suggesting he will not be choosing to retire from TV just yet as he sets his sights on a new job.
“There’s an old saying that you always have to know the best time to leave even the greatest party. And that’s what my 32 years at Sky have been – the most fantastic party I could ever imagined attending,” he told the Daily Mail.
“From the first kick of a ball in the live coverage of the Premier League to Manchester City’s title celebrations last season, with plenty in between! I have been incredibly fortunate to work for a ground-breaking company who have helped revolutionise football.
“But the time is right to move on. Sky have been incredibly generous in recognition of my service and I can’t speak more highly of so many people I’ve worked with there over three decades.
“I now have the opportunity for new experiences which I’m looking forward to announcing in the very near future.”
Sky uploaded a graphic to their official Twitter account with confirmation that he would be leaving: “Tunnel reporter Geoff Shreeves is leaving Sky Sports.
“He’s been an integral part of the Sky Sports football team for over 30 years. Geoff leaves with our sincere thanks and best wishes for the future.”
Shreeves’ colleague and Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher paid tribute to the reporter after reacting to the news of his departure.
He tweeted from Twitter account: “Sky Sports Legend! Great at his job especially when asking managers the difficult questions, great company & will be missed!! Cheers Geoff,” with a ‘wink’ emoji to emphasise the famous catchphrase uttered by commentators after receiving one of his touchline updates.
Gary Hughes, Sky Sports’ Director of Football, said: “Geoff has been an integral part of the Sky Sports football team and the best tunnel reporter in the business, interviewing the biggest names at the biggest games for over 30 years. Geoff leaves with our sincere thanks and best wishes for the future. As Sir Alex always said, ‘well done, Geoff!'”
Sky have continued their ruthless revamp of their broadcasting talent just weeks after it was announced that lead commentator Martin Tyler would be departing to be replaced by the popular Peter Drury.
The report also claims that long-serving Soccer Saturday reporters Guy Havord and Bianca Westwood are ‘known to be on the way out’, with some other staff members told to reapply for their jobs.
