Gay footballer Josh Cavallo has spoken out after he was subjected to sickening homophobic abuse during an A-League match over the weekend. The Adelaide United defender came out in October on social media to huge acclaim.
Josh Cavallo has admitted that he is “disappointed” after receiving homophobic abuse during Adelaide United’s clash with Melbourne Victory on Saturday night.
The 22-year-old, who was verbally abused, took to Instagram and Twitter to issue a statement, in which he said he still worried about society in 2022.
“I’m not going to pretend that I didn’t see or hear the homophobic abuse at the game last night,” Cavallo wrote on Instagram on Sunday.
“There are no words to tell you how disappointed I was. As a society this shows we still face these problems in 2022.

“This shouldn’t be acceptable and we need to do more to hold this (sic) people accountable.
“Hate never will win. I will never apologise for living my truth and most recently who I am outside of football.”
He also condemned social media platforms for not going to great enough lengths to stop abuse from happening.
“To @instagram and @Twitter I don’t want any child or adult to have to receive the hateful and hurtful messages that I’ve received,” he added.
“I knew truly being who I am that I was going to come across this.
“It’s a sad reality that your platforms are not doing enough to stop these messages.”
Melbourne Victory have released a statement in light of Cavallo’s claims, with an investigation set to take place.
“The club is committed to celebrating diversity in football, and strongly condemns this behaviour which has no place in our club or in our game,” the statement read.
