Gary Lineker ‘under review’ by Twitter after losing blue checkmark
Last month the football pundit and Match of the Day presenter was temporarily taken off air by the BBC after posting a tweet comparing the government’s immigration policy to 1930s Germany.
While he’s now returned to hosting duties, it appears his social media presence may be under a spotlight again after he lost his blue tick on Twitter.
On Saturday Gary, 62, responded to a question that had been posed about why his account didn’t have a verification checkmark anymore.
‘No idea. I’m under review apparently,’ he shared, whilst also tagging Twitter and one of its support pages.
When someone joked that he might have missed his bill for £8 after paid account perks were introduced for users, Gary said that didn’t seem to be the issue.
‘I’ve actually been paying it for a while. Only for the Edit button, but nevertheless,’ he shared.
However, it appears that the issue could be changing his profile photo, with other users saying their accounts had been subjected to review after they had done the same.
Last month Gary changed his profile picture, which also looked like it could have been a subtle dig at his employer.
In it, he was seen standing in front of a plaque that quoted George Orwell.
It read: ‘If liberty means anything at all it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.’
The plaque is part of a memorial to the writer outside the BBC’s Broadcasting House in London, which also includes a statue of its former employee, who worked there during the Second World War but eventually left to focus on writing Animal Farm.
