Gary Lineker mockingly brands Nadine Dorries’ BBC Breakfast interview a ‘comedy sketch’
Former Premier League footballer Gary Lineker was apparently left in hysterics after watching the disastrous political interview, which saw Nadine, The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, put on the spot in scenes some described as “eye wateringly embarrassing”. In the chat, Nadine took a defensive stance with journalist Charlie Stayt on air, while insisting that photo footage of Boris Johnson appearing to enjoy a beer at a “lockdown birthday party” was part of a plot by pro-EU supporters exercising anti-Brexit sentiments.
Gary Lineker’s response to the drama was clear, after he took to Twitter to chortle to his 8.3 million followers: “Love these comedy sketches. Really funny.”
He made the jibe in response to Gary Neville’s post of an excerpt, which he claimed he’d been unable to stop watching.
It seems that even top celebrities were left transfixed by the “car crash” interview, which left Nadine with few escape routes from the BBC’s tough line of questioning.
Insisting that Johnson had been attacked and misrepresented by Remainers sad to see Britain leaving the EU, she claimed: “There are a small number of voices, whether they are people who were ardent supporters of Remain, who see this as their last opportunity to reverse Brexit. That certainly is at play with a group.”
Her argument received little sympathy from Stayt, who told her he was “confused” by her inability to answer “simple questions”.
He drilled: “Have you spoken to the prime minister recently, in the last 24 hours?”
“Why? Why are you asking me that question?” Nadine hit back, giving nothing away.
“I’d like to know,” he responded. Noticing her hesitation, he continued: “I’m really confused, is that a difficult question?
“His mood is very positive, extremely positive – onwards is one of his favourite expressions,” she insisted
Boris Johnson has previously insisted he wasn’t aware of any wrongdoing at Downing Street and that what had been described as a party, with wine flowing, was in fact a “work meeting”.
However, the explanation was not accepted by everyone, including some who had been forced to stay away from care homes as relatives died alone, due to Covid restrictions.
Many argued that the Prime Minister had broken the same rules that he’d expected everyone else to follow.
Meanwhile, those who had lost loved ones and had been unable to say goodbye, or even hug members of their family at a funeral, were devastated.
When asked whether the Prime Minister had changed his attitude, Nadine hit back: “About what?”
“We’re told that he sent out messages saying, ‘I’ve got it, I get this’ about things that had been done wrong,” Charlie Stayt elaborated. “The implication was that he was going to do business slightly differently.”
Nadine eventually conceded: “What I would say is that the prime minister promised to change.”
Branding the exchange “comedy”, Gary Lineker was certainly tickled by it.
Twitter users responded to the sport commentator with amusement, with @ayearofhope chuckling: “What better way to take attention off Boris Johnson than to send Nadine out to speak to the media… My TL [timeline] is now filled with this interview so the Government deflection tactic is working!”
@DJJamieTaylor1 added: “I’m laughing my b******s off and I’m not rich.”
@Lbaddhan groaned: “This is our government! What an embarrassment! It just keeps giving.”
