Gardeners’ World’s Adam Frost left ‘depressed’ after health woes

About two years ago, 52-year-old Adam Frost contracted coronavirus. It was already a difficult time; as his wife Sulina had been ill in hospital and developed sepsis, then their daughter Amber-Lily, who was 15 at the time, became sick.

In an unearthed interview with the Sunday Times from last year, the Gardeners’ World presenter explained: “Amber-Lily ended up with an eating disorder; like a lot of 15-year-olds, she had friends going through it at school. So that took its toll. Then nearly 12 months ago I got Covid and was locked in a room.

“We all got Covid. Then ten days later I sat in front of a psychiatrist and a doctor and said, ‘You know, I’ve got burnout and depression,’ which was a surprise as I only went into the room with Covid. The wheels came off a little bit.”

Due to the tribulations the family had faced, they decided to sell Villa Farm and move. Now, their new house is a playground for the agricultural lover.

He added: “It’s great, growing vegetables in the front, it means I’ve done a lot of chatting with my next-door neighbour”.

As a result of the painful times the family had endured, Frost discovered just how important gardening was for his mental health. Now he hosts a podcast series with a psychologist for Gardeners’ World.

Luckily, Sulina, Frost’s wife, is a happy gardening convert, and appears in his latest book.

Speaking at the time about how his new passion project was helping with his state of mind, Frost said: “It’s a beautiful Lincolnshire stone. It feels safe, it feels homely. We already have a new kitchen.

“The kitchen is right in the middle of the property and the house goes around it. We’ve gone in and sorted the kitchen out. Strangely enough it’s the first time in our lives we’ve actually been able to choose the things we want, rather than adapt or jiggle a little bit. It’s been quite exciting really.”

Frost’s father died in 2012 and had previously worked as a landscape gardener himself. Although he spent most of his childhood gardening with his grandmothers, whom he refers to in his book as “Tidy Nan” and “Scruffy Nan”.

“Tidy Nan’s garden had a typical Seventies suburban feel to it, with neat stripes on the lawn and lots of roses and bedding plants. Then there was Scruffy Nan. Her garden was a bit like Heligan before they found it, although not as big!”
