Gallen signs new three-fight boxing deal
Cronulla Sharks great turned boxer Paul Gallen has revealed he’s signed a new contract for three more fights set to take place over the next 18 months.
Despite being urged by a host of boxing legends to retire following his gutsy TKO loss to Australian heavyweight champion Justis Huni in June, Gallen revealed he’s set to go around at least one more time.
However, the 39-year-old has at least in part heeded the warnings of combat sports pundits, agreeing to only fight NRL stars eager to test their mettle in the ring.
“I’ve just locked in three (fights),” Gallen revealed on WWOS radio on 2GB.
“Yeah. Just a few footy players. All the footy players want to fight me, they think they can beat me. So I thought, ‘Yeah, I’ll fight them.'”
Gallen confirmed his three-fight deal would take place over the next 18-months but has yet to lock in any opponents.
“Probably one this year and a couple next year,” he said.
“I don’t know who against. I did sign a contract.
“I’ll fight footy players, not again against the best fighter Australia has seen.”
Earlier this year, Gallen (11-1-1, 6 KOs) was waved-off by referee John Cauchi in the 10th and final round of his Australian heavyweight title fight against Huni (5-0, 4 KOs), following a knockdown. It was Gallen’s first defeat.
The Sharks legend made more than $1 million from his fight against Huni, reportedly claiming an 85 per cent purse split on top of pay-per-view revenue.
