Gaethje to face Oliveira for lightweight belt in blow to McGrgegor’s title hopes
CONOR McGREGOR’S title shot hopes have gone up in smoke with Justin Gaethje set to face lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.
The belt is set to be on the line on May 7 at UFC 274 with the event location still yet to be confirmed.
Oliveira is aiming to defend his title for the second time after taking out former interim champ Dustin Poirier in the third round with a rear-naked choke submission at UFC 269.
He claimed the title, which was vacated by Khabib Nurmagomedov, by beating Michael Chandler in the second via TKO at UFC 262.
Now he faces another huge test in Chandler – who is getting his second crack at the championship.
The 33-year-old American came up short against Khabib back at UFC 254 in October 2020.
‘The Highlight’ has campaigned for a title shot against Oliveira for months.
And he recently hit back at McGregor for suggesting that it should be the Irishman instead who gets one.

The Notorious is still recovering from the tibia he broke seconds before the first round of his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier ended.
But with McGregor’s rehabilitation progressing, UFC president Dana White is eyeing a summer comeback for his main attraction.
And the superstar looks like he will be in incredible shape after revealing a stunning body transformation.
