G20 regional workshop in Vizag focuses on private urban financing – Times of India

Visakhapatnam: The two-day regional workshop on ‘how cities can leverage private finance’, jointly being organised by the department of economic affairs, ministry of housing and urban affairs, and International Finance Corporation, commenced in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday. The event is part of Jan Bhagidari events planned around the second G20 Infrastructure Working Group (IWG) meetings scheduled to be held on March 28 and 29 in Visakhapatnam.
Over 70 participants including municipal commissioners, mayors, and representatives from urban state departments from the states of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha and two Union Territories i.e., Lakshadweep, and Puducherry attended the workshop on Wednesday.
The inaugural address was given by department of economic affairs joint secretary Shri Solomon Arokiaraj. He highlighted the significance of leveraging private financing for the cities. IFC Country Manager for India Wendy Jo Werner and senior program manager, EU Delegation, Delphine Brissonneau expressed their thoughts on the relevance of the theme and how cities play a significant role as economic centres of growth.
In a session on improving civic infrastructure, SBM-U Mission director Binay Kumar Jha, AMRUT Mission director Lavanya Kumar and Smart Cities Mission director Lal Chhandama discussed the scale and performance of each of the missions of MoHUA respectively. Binay Jha showcased the IT enabled services through Swachhata App, women participation, and rating systems for the cities. Lavanya Kumar apprised about the public-private partnership model being taken up in water supply and sewerage projects in million-plus cities. Lal Chhandama presented 10 successful case studies comprising of transport hub, C&D waste, rooftop solar panels, mobility card, public-bicycle sharing, etc. in smart cities.
Principal investment officer, and country anchor for infrastructure, IFC, Neeraj Gupta provided the perspectives of the regulators and discussed the constraints to commercial funding.
George Butler from the IFC discussed strategies to reduce non-revenue water supported by international case studies. Mahantesh Hokarani from KUIDFC, Karnataka also shared the successful case of KUWASIP programme, wherein Kalburgi, Hubli Dharwad and Belgaum achieved 24×7 water supply.
The workshop presented a platform to cross-learn successful case studies from various states including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, with examples ranging from drinking water supply, solid waste management, affordable housing, waste to energy plants, etc.
The first day sessions on Wednesday covered themes like ‘improving civic infrastructure, taking stock’, ‘constraints to commercial financing’, ‘international experiences’, ‘etc.
‘International and national case studies on preparation and implementation of innovative projects related to water and wastewater’, ‘innovative projects related to waste and affordable housing’, etc. have also been discussed.
The event witnessed participation from credit rating agencies, regulators, various financial institutions like, city/state leaders, experts from ministry of housing and urban affairs, etc.
