G.O.D.S.: House of X’s Jonathan Hickman Reveals His Next Marvel Epic
After months of teasing, Marvel Comics has finally revealed the next major work from House of X and Powers of X writer Jonathan Hickman. Hickman will team with A.X.E.: Judgment Day artist Valerio Schiti for G.O.D.S., a series that aims to redefine the most powerful beings in the Marvel cosmos.
G.O.D.S. is a series that revolves around cosmic entities like Eternity and the Living Tribunal. Hickman and Schiti are telling an ambitious story that seeks to explore these beings and the very nature of power and godhood in the Marvel Universe. It all revolves around a new character named Wyn, someone with a mysterious connection to these beings and a war that’s been raging since long before the Avengers and Fantastic Four were defending the universe.
“When I came back to Marvel a few years ago, I wrote two series bibles. The first was House of X and the other one was G.O.D.S.,” Hickman said in Marvel’s press release. “To say that I’m excited to finally be able to share this story with everyone is a massive understatement. G.O.D.S. takes place in its own special corner of the Marvel Universe — in the cracks that lie at the intersection of science and magic — and revisits some characters and concepts that we’ve reimagined for a more modern, continuity-driven audience.”
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Valerio Schiti on this for the last year, and watching him bring this to life has been a total joy,” Hickman continued. “G.O.D.S. is my favorite kind of Marvel comic: one that feels like something old, but pushes the Marvel Universe in an exciting new direction.”
The expectation is that G.O.D.S. will reshape the direction of Marvel’s cosmic line as significantly as House of X and Powers of X did for the X-Men franchise in 2019. Those books dramatically changed the status quo of mutants in the Marvel Universe, including establishing the mutant nation of Krakoa and allowing the X-Men to achieve immortality.
House of X and Powers of X paved the way for relaunched line of X-Men comics under the “Dawn of X” banner. It’s unclear if Marvel has similar plans for G.O.D.S., but for now, this story appears to be planned as a single monthly series. G.O.D.S. #1 will debut at some point in Fall 2023.
This isn’t Hickman’s only new Marvel project in 2023. He and The Ultimates artist Bryan Hitch are teaming up to revive the Ultimate Universe in Ultimate Invasion.
