Interim GWS Giants coach Mark McVeigh has questioned the mentality of his players after a loss against the Brisbane Lions continued a season to forget.
After a tightly contested first half, the Lions kicked nine goals to four following the main break to finish 15. 9. (99) to 9. 5. (59) winners, leaving GWS in 14th position on the ladder.
McVeigh’s future at the club is uncertain, after being vaulted into the top job in the wake of Leon Cameron’s exit earlier in the year, but that did not stop him from offering a damning assessment of his players.

“Some of our players … where are they at with their heads?” McVeigh said.
“You can’t have a heavy fade-out and sail into the sunset. They’re aware of that and I know they’ve got together at the end of the game by themselves. I won’t be letting up in my approach to train them hard.
“When a loss happens like today and last week there are always consequences from a selection point of view.”
The Lions’ win came despite the likes of Daniel Rich, Dayne Zorko, Jarrod Berry and Oscar McInerney all being sidelined.
The win allowed Brisbane to stay in touch with the top of the AFL ladder, with the Lions sitting third behind Geelong and Melbourne.
