Fuming Barrett demands ‘answers’ after controversial loss

Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett says he wants “some answers” from the NRL following two controversial tries that went the way of the Broncos during Canterbury’s 16-10 loss.

During the second half with the Bulldogs on top by a converted try at the time, Herbie Farnworth scored his first of two tries after stripping the ball from Braidon Burns before racing away.

Farnworth, Payne Haas and Albert Kelly at one stage all appeared to be involved in the tackle. Kelly quickly peeled off and Haas followed soon after as Farnworth stripped the ball to race away for the try.

But Burns clearly wasn’t happy that the referee hadn’t ruled that the tackle had been completed, looking pleadingly at the referee after it appeared he might’ve been held before the strip occurred.

“I thought we should have iced that game and we had our chances,” Barrett said.

“The two tries, the strip — the contentious one — and the obstruction off the scrum.

“You can’t do that and that will be something we need to get some answers on.

“I don’t coach players to lie down, but maybe I will now.”

The last comment is a reference to Farnworth’s second try that came about when the centre raced away off a scrum play.

In the lead-up to Farnworth’s break, Bulldogs players protested that Corey Oates had obstructed Burns, preventing him from helping his winger Jayden Okunbor defuse the situation.

However, the bunker allowed the try to stand.

Barrett was asked why he thought the bunker allowed Farnworth’s second try to stand.

“I have no idea, but I’ll ask because he led with the outside shoulder at Braidon Burns,” Barrett replied.

“Okunbor thinks he’s got help coming, but he didn’t. It’s in the rule book and you can’t do it – and it cost us badly.

“But outside of that, we still had a lot of chances to win the game.”

Brisbane coach Kevin Walters was asked about Barrett’s comments and conceded his Broncos might have had some luck on their side.

“We probably got a little bit of luck there I guess,” Walters said. “I know that Oatesy did pull back on it. We’ll take that one, it could have gone the other way. But we lost a couple as well tonight. I think it balances out in the end.”
