FRSC Fellow 2023: NISER scientist admitted as Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry – Times of India

BHUBANESWAR: Himansu Biswal, an associate professor at the School of Chemical Sciences, National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) Bhubaneswar, has been honoured as the Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) by the Royal Society of Chemistry, London.
FRSC is a global honour for a scientist and academician of chemical science. He got a confirmation mail from the Royal Society of Chemistry, London about this on Saturday. His research interests include solvation and isomerization of peptides using Laser Spectroscopy, sulfur/selenium/carbon center hydrogen bonds and their role in the structure and function of biomolecules.
This academician and his students have developed a software called ‘ViLEG’ (Virtual Laboratory Experiments for Graduates) to demonstrate various experiments to rural students without taking help of laboratory equipment physically. It is meant for the undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students who do not have access to high-end and costly instruments of laboratories like fluorimeter and spectrometers. They can do several experiments virtually through this software.
Biswal, a native of Rampa village under Bari block of Jajpur district, completed his PG at Utkal University and did his PhD at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. He further obtained his higher education at CEA, Saclay, Paris and the University of Michigan, USA.
He joined the School of Chemical Sciences at NISER Bhubaneswar, in 2012. Apart from teaching chemistry, he is involved in building scientific instruments. He has built a state of art spectroscopic facility at NISER. It is known as Supersonic Jet spectroscopy which is used to study hydrogen bonding and other Noncovalent Interactions at the molecular level.
