Frozen Dead Guy rises in Estes this weekend

The lineup for Estes Park’s inaugural Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival features both national and local acts, and lively events.

Three days of live music and entertainment over St. Patrick’s Day weekend, March 17-19, 2023, will thrill festival goers with iconic favorites alongside fun, new additions.

FRIDAY, MARCH 17

The festival kicks off with an icebreaker event at Bond Park located at the corner of MacGregor and Elkhorn Avenues from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mayor Wendy Koenig will be there to proclaim the official start of revelry. There will be music featuring  A-Mac & The Height and Chain Station, a food truck court, in case you’re dying to eat, and a classic hearse graveyard sponsored by the Denver Hearse Association. You know what they say, if you have to go, ride in style.

Don’t miss the Irish Wake at Cousin Pat’s Pub & Grill, 451 S. Saint Vrain Ave., from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. Grandpa Bredo, a/k/a/ the frozen dead guy, meets Cousin Patty McMurder. Come enjoy Irish cocktails and dine on corned beef and cabbage, and live music starting at 7 p.m. with Tahosa, an Estes Park band that started as a tribute to the classic southern rock of the 70s but has turned into a whole lot more.

The Barrel is starting the day early at 11 a.m. with specialty St. Patrick’s Day Cocktails and Irish Whiskey, Pot of Gold Beer Pong, Sponsored by Maxline Brewing Co. at 1 p.m. with prizes including a special merch bundle of goodies from Maxline Brewing Co. Keeping it Irish, there will be Potato Bowling, also sponsored by Maxline Brewing Co. at 2 p.m. There will be a Hooligan Ring Toss, sponsored by Left Hand Brewing Co., at 3 p.m. The first prize is growler fills for a year from Left Hand Brewing Co. There will be live music by Say Uncle from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. sponsored by Deep Eddy Vodka and Tivoli Brewing Co. And traditional Irish cuisine will be dished up by Wes Moore, owner of WesTex BBQ Food Truck.

The second annual St. Patty’s Day Beer Mile Pub Crawl and Race will take place between Lumpy Ridge Brewing Co. (531 S St Vrain Ave.) and Avant Garde Aleworks. Registration is $30. Check-in begins at 4 p.m. at Lumpy Ridge. The race begins promptly at 5 p.m. Participants will drink Beer #1 at Lumpy Ridge and then walk, run, skip, or saunter north along Highway 7 to Avant Guard Aleworks. There they will turn in their bib ticket for Beer #2, have their second beer and celebrate the halfway point. Then participants will travel back to Lumpy Ridge to finish the last leg of the race and turn in their bib ticket for Beer #3 to claim their final beer. The time clock stops when your third beer is gone, after which participants can pick up their Post-Race Pot o’ Gold swag bag. Festive St. Patrick’s Day outfits are encouraged. Post-race musical entertainment will be provided by Good Time Johnny back at Avant Garde. Lumpy Ridge Brewing is the official Frozen Dead Guy brewer and official souvenir cans are a must-have remembrance of the wacky weekend.

The One Foot in the Grave Party kicks off at Lonigans Saloon, Nightclub and Grill, An Irish Pub, 110 West Elkhorn Ave, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with live music by Nick Wagner, perfect for dinner, followed by the Mountain Town Rockers, $10 cover, perfect for dancing, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., and that’s just Friday night.

These events are followed by the iconic Royal Blue Ball at The Stanley Hotel, 333 E. Wonderview Ave., a dance party featuring the Grandpa Bredo and Ice Queen Costume Contest. Please do come dressed to kill, or rather make sure your outfit is to die for. The ball begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are $99. Live entertainment for the Royal Blue Ball includes:

The Polish Ambassador: This San Francisco-based EDM artist rocks more than just a trademark jumpsuit, bringing technicolor vibes to his thrilling performances.

Eddie Roberts and Friends: A funk and soul supergroup led by the frontman of The New Mastersounds, Eddie Roberts.

Evanoff: A staple in the Colorado music scene, this guitar-driven live-electronic trio is defined by a bold live show full of sonic exploration.

SATURDAY, MARCH 18

The Estes Park Events Complex is the setting for the day’s main events, beginning at noon and running until 9:30 p.m.

A live music lineup of national and Colorado bands will play all day while teams of pallbearers compete in the iconic coffin races and festival goers take part in the Frostbite Fashion Show and whacky games like a brain freeze contest, frozen t-shirt contest, newly dead game, frozen head bowling, a pie toss game, and another chance to catch the hearse graveyard.

The Pearl Street Stompers at Brunch & Co, in The Lodge at The Stanley Hotel, 333 E. Wonderview Ave. Brunch in an elegant atmosphere with a magnificent view of Long’s Peak and the Front Range.

Eric Halborg and Cole Rudy from Dragoneer Acoustic at The Post Chicken & Beer, 333 E. Wonderview Ave. Listen to a hybrid of Mississippi Delta blues and 1960s psychedelic rock while enjoying southern comfort food and live music from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Polar Plunge

Coffee on the Rocks, 510 Moraine Ave., noon to 3 p.m. This lively fan-favorite Frozen Dead Guy Days event benefits the Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center’s Be-a-Giving-Guest Program. Each $10 entrant fee will benefit the program while watching is free. There will be live music, an outdoor bar, a beer pong tournament, a costume contest, and giveaways for both those brave enough to take the plunge, and for those there for the merriment, to enjoy.

Other Events

At the Historic Park Theater, 130 Moraine Ave., there will be psychic readings by Rebekah Blackburn, haunted tours, ghost hunts, and showings of Night of the Living Dead. Show times for the movie are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The 2-hour-long ghost hunts are $35 and are limited to 30 people. The info sessions start at 9:30 p.m. for the Friday and Saturday night 10 p.m. hunt, and 11:30 p.m. for the Friday and Saturday midnight hunt. Tickets are available at https://historicparktheatre.com/now-playing Haunted tours are Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., and Sunday at 12:05 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. Price: $12.

Pirate Face Productions presents Frosty Balls! Drag Queen Bingo at Lonigans Saloon, Nightclub and Grill, An Irish Pub, 110 West Elkhorn Ave, noon to 2 p.m. This is not your grandmother’s Sunday bingo. Drag Queen Khloe Katz brings comedy, fun, and games. This event is for those 21 years and older. Admission is $20.

Nick Wagner, The Complete Meltdown, The Lost Penny Duo, and Chili Powder at the American Legion Post 119, 850 N Saint Vrain Ave. Brunch 8 a.m. to noon, then from noon to 5 p.m. live music, games with prizes, local artisan merchants, a kids’ corner, and more.
