From sausage fingers to tampons people got inventive with Coronation cakes
Bakers all over the nation have been busy making all manner of cakes for the Coronation of King Charles III.
From busts of the King and hyperrealistic crowns to ‘sausage-fingered’ hands and odes to the tampon-gate phone hacking scandal, people really put their all into baking for the Chazzle Dazzle (yes, we’re still trying to make that happen).
Meryn Cobbin, the creator of the puffy hand, tells Metro.co.uk that the incredible cake had a marmalade filing and took around three hours to make.
‘I won’t express views on the Coronation,’ she said, ‘but at least the £10 spent on the cake was worth the money.
‘We all enjoyed having a nibble on the royal digits.’
What a delightful turn of phrase!
Here are some more of the best bakes we’ve seen so far…
Lee McAuliffe, from Shave in Blackburn, spent 15 hours making a slightly more conventional coronation cake for a client.
This bake included a chocolate fudge crown with chocolate fudge buttercream and a gluten-free lemon sponge with lemon curd buttercream for the lower tier.

Lee, who’s been baking for 10 years, kept to his ‘trademark’ look even as he incorporated Union flag bunting to match the crown-shaped cake.
He said: ‘I knew I wanted a crown to be the main part of the design and obviously, Union flag bunting had to make an appearance.
‘My lower tier has become a bit of my trademark look so with the gold this worked well in combining all the elements I thought of.’
Catherine Davies, who turns 52 today, baked a triple-layered vanilla cake with lemon and elderflower buttercream as a prize for a raffle ahead of the Coronation.
‘The drip cake is one of my most popular cakes. The lady who won it wanted a nod to the Coronation on it,’ said Catherine, who’s a teaching assistant and owns her own cake business.
‘She was delighted to win the cake and was very happy when she saw it, commenting on how beautiful it was.’
The baker, from Crowborough in East Sussex, said her cake took around two hours to make.
‘I thought the insignia on the top was elegant and looked good in gold, matching the drip down the sides,” she said.
‘The flavour was chosen by the customer after I gave her lots of options. It’s a lovely summery flavour.’
