From 45 to 7 girls: More compact Ppop Gen hopes for easier name recall

The girl group PPop Generation originally debuted in 2019 with 45 members and three “teams.” But after the pandemic, they were whittled down to seven in hopes of coming up with a tighter, more cohesive unit.

Now simply dubbed as Ppop Gen, the overhauled group is now composed of Gabh (leader, main vocalist), Sofia (center, main dancer), Sarah (face, sub-rapper), Madz (lead vocalist, main rapper), Princess (visuals), Char (sub-vocalist) and Angela (visuals, lead rapper). Geleen Eugenio, the group’s mentor and creative director, believes that this iteration “embodies the youthful energy” that she had originally envisioned. And with attention firmly on the remaining performers—fondly referred to as the “P-pop Lucky 7”—couldn’t help but feel happy, lucky and nervous all at once.

“The process [of] going from Ppop Generation to Ppop Gen wasn’t easy because a lot of members left,” Gabh said at a recent press conference. “We had to make a lot of adjustments.”

“Now that we’re only seven, I believe that we’re stronger and more solid. I feel like it will be easier for us to shine because it will be easier for us to be recognized by people. Back when we were 45, it was hard for people to memorize our names,” Madz pointed out.

Two singles

The new PPop Gen has released two singles so far: the female empowerment anthem “Prinsesa” and the sultry midtempo dance bop “Hanggang Tingin Ka Lang,” which was released last month.

“This song is about putting people who cross our boundaries in their place,” Angela said of the track, which was coproduced by Geleen and Kevin Yadao.

“Some people may seem like they’re supporting you or admiring you as idols. But later on, you realize that they actually have different intentions,” Gabh added.

The girls know that they still have a lot to learn and improve as artists. It’s a daunting challenge, they admitted, but one they’re willing to face. “We want to be known for our resilience,” Sarah said.

Char looks forward to honing their skills and addressing their weaknesses with her bandmates as they continue their journey in the biz. “This is an opportunity for us to help each other,” she said.
