French island that looks like Tahiti & it’s just a short hop across the Channel
AN ISLAND in Europe is so beautiful that it’s been compared to a popular honeymoon destination in French Polynesia.
Along with its amazing beaches, the lesser-known French Island is also easily accessible from the UK.
In recent years, the beaches and landscapes of Île Callot have been compared to Tahiti by both travel experts and holidaymakers.
In a review on TripAdvisor, one holidaymaker wrote: “Great white sand just like in Tahiti.”
While another added: “A very beautiful beach, only the water temperature differs from the beaches of Tahiti.”
Meanwhile, Brittany Ferries told Sun Online Travel: “Brittany’s Île Callot may look like a Polynesian paradise but is only a short ferry trip across the Channel.”
Industry body Discover Ferries is keen to highlight that many dream destinations are right on the UK’s doorstep.
And some of them are, in fact, ferry local, including Île Callot in Brittany.
Also referred to as Callot Island, it’s possibly most well-known for its seahorse-shaped appearance.
While only a few residents still remain on the island, the population increases during the summer months when tourists flock to the secluded spot.
The island has around a dozen beaches including its very own Tahiti Beach – a soft, sandy, beach complete with a cocktail bar.
Other beaches include Plage de Pennenez, the Plage de Park an Illiz, and the Plage Hôpital, which is the largest beach on the island.
At each of these spots, holidaymakers can sunbathe, swim and relax.
But there are plenty of other tourist attractions on the island including a large walking route where holidaymakers can walk the island’s 2km perimeter.
Dotted along the route are several lookout points where visitors will be able to see Baie de Morlaix, Saint-Pol-de-Léon, and Roscoff.
The island’s oldest building, Notre Dame de Callot, is the highest viewpoint on the island and dates back to the 5th Century.
Meanwhile, the northern tip of the island is officially a protected area under the governance of the General Council of Finistère.
There are other attractions on the island too including an abandoned island school that’s been turned into an exhibition space, and the Château du Taureau.
The temperature only goes as low as 10C in the winter and can reach 21C in the summer.
The best way to reach Île Callot is by ferry from Plymouth to the French port of Roscoff, which is a 26-minute drive away from Carantec.
From there, Île Callot can be reached by a long path when the tide is low.
Holidaymakers can either walk or cycle along the 800m long path, and in July and August a free shuttle service operates from the port too, but it’s best to check the tide times before heading down to the island.
In recent years, holidaymakers have been raving about the little island on TripAdvisor.
One person wrote: “A lovely little visit during the sunset. We drove over the causeway as the sun set over the water and it was beautiful. Some lovely little beaches to visit.”
Another added: “The island is pretty and a super place for rock pooling and shell hunting.”
While a third person wrote: “Lovely place for a relaxing walk with great views – places to go for a quick swim and not too much of an intense walk so everyone can enjoy.”
There are also plenty of other ferry routes from the UK to France.
Brittany Ferries operates other routes from Portsmouth to Caen, Cherbourg, Le Havre, and Saint-Malo, and DFDS runs services between Newhaven and Dieppe.
While serval operators including DFDS, Irish Ferries, and P&O run crossings from Dover to France.
If you fancy elsewhere in Europe, an island in Greece is said to be better than Mykonos.
And in the UK, there is a British island that looks just like the Caribbean.
