Free Earth Day concert, Feist in-the-round, Denver Bike Lobby rides RTD and more things to do this weekend
Earth Day 2022: DJ Cavem’s free hip-hop, eco-justice fest
Friday. Denver artist and activist Ietef Vita, known by most as DJ Cavem, has taken his eco-hip hop music, message and workshops from Denver to Berlin to the White House (where he was invited during the Obama administration), while collaborating with some of rap’s biggest names. Naturally, he’s sponsored by hippie brand Dr. Bronner’s and has released his music as USDA certified seed packets (with downloads, of course).
On Friday, April 22, he’s holding an all-ages album release show and day of activities as part of Denver’s Earth Day Celebration, at Civic Center park’s McNichols Building. The “Koncrete Garden” party, named after the new album on Vita’s Plant Based Records, is free and includes “Chi’d-Up” yoga, “Inner City Foraging Workshop,” cooking classes, a panel discussion, live Performances from Cavem, Grey PBD and Ra Yoseph, a screening of the film “Can You Dig This?” with noted activist Ron Finley, as well as constant and easy access to the outside festivities (including food trucks, a lowrider bike show, etc.).
Events at 144 W. Colfax Ave. Free. Visit eventbrite.com to register, and for more on this show, and for Civic Center’s Earth Day Celebration.
Also musically worthy this weekend: Feist’s big production at the Buell Theatre, Friday and Friday, April 22-Saturday, April 23. The Canadian indie songwriter is on the road with “Multitudes,” a refreshingly in-the-round production designed by Rob Sinclair (David Byrne’s “American Utopia”) that brings the limited capacity audience up-close with the acclaimed singer-songwriter. Tickets: $99.50-$189. axs.com
Native American Spring Craft Sale
Saturday-Sunday. Staged this year at Lakota Way Healing Center, the 2022 Native American Craft Fair returns with diverse cultural wares from jewelry makers, crafters and traditional food makers of North America — think Renee’s Famous Frybread and Indian Tacos (yum).
Handmade and one-of-kind items include beadwork, blankets, flutes, rugs, baskets, jewelry, herbal teas, pottery, visual art, traditional leather work, moccasins and more. Free admission. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, April 23, and Sunday, April 24, at 201 W. 5th Ave. in Denver. lakotaway.org/events
Crossing tires with Denver Bicycle Lobby
Saturday. Looking to ride your bike and use more public transportation? On Saturday, April 23, Denver Bicycle Lobby is holding a free, outside coffee meetup about riding for transportation — specifically, RTD’s network of park-and-rides. “Bring a friend that may want to ride but worries about how to get started,” organizers wrote, adding that meetup will cover route-finding, gear and (perhaps most important) how to make it fun.
“Because we’ll be on Denver’s first Dutch-style woonerf (shared street) where traffic is very low you’ll be in a great place to ride safely,” they wrote. Free to attend, 1-3 p.m. at Union Station in Lower Downtown, 1701 Wynkoop St. in Denver. denverbicyclelobby.com
