Freddie Mercury’s Rolls-Royce sells for nearly 10 times its estimate at auction

A ROLLS-ROYCE owned by famous frontman Freddie Mercury has smashed its original estimate at auction.

The 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was cherished by the singer who owned it for more than a decade from 1979 until his passing.

It sold as part of an RM Sotheby’s London Sale auction held on 7th November, exceeding its estimate by almost 10 times.

Experts had the Roller down to fetch as much as £30,000, but in the end, bidding stopped at a whopping £286,250.

Silver Shadows aren’t the most collectable Rolls-Royce models, but it’s clear that Freddie’s is a cut above the rest.

All proceeds from the sale go to Superhumans Center, a charity established to provide aid in Ukraine.

The Silver Shadow comes in its original colours inside and out, with silver paint over a blue leather interior.

It’s not known what happened to the car during the first five years of its life, but it was bought by Mercury’s company Goose Productions in 1979.

Freddie never had a driving licence, so it’s more likely the singer sat in the back.

In fact, it is thought that the Silver Shadow was Mercury’s personal chauffeur-driven transport at a time when the band would record much of its best-known music.

After Freddie’s death in 1991, the car was taken on by Mercury’s sister Kashmira Cooke who enjoyed the car for many years.

The buyer will get various garage invoices with Freddie’s name on them as proof he was the owner.

There’s also a letter on file from Jim Beach, long-time band manager of Queen, which verifies the car’s celebrity ownership.

In a documentary film, Beach said: “We filmed the promo video for We Will Rock You in the garden of Roger Taylor’s new Surrey mansion and Freddie upstaged everyone by arriving in his brand new Roller.

“Freddie insisted that we sign all of the contracts, all of us together, in the back of the Roller, because this was the first Rolls he’d ever owned.”
