Four midfielders Liverpool could sign in January transfer window

Liverpool have once again been thrust into an injury nightmare in midfield after Arthur Melo suffered an unspecified issue that is set to rule him out for the next three to four months. The Brazilian is yet to make a start since his move from Juventus on deadline day, with the player ironically originally signing to provide injury cover with Jurgen Klopp lacking options in central areas.

With Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all currently on the sidelines the German may be thrust back into the transfer market to bring in further reinforcements. January is usually a tricky time to conduct business, with the Reds having to focus on cheaper targets who may be available this winter, meaning they are unlikely to be able to complete a move for top target Jude Bellingham at this moment in time.

Here Express Sport discusses the club’s potential options for the centre of the park, with four potential options on offer.

Youri Tielemans

The Leicester midfielder has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle in recent months. However, he could be the perfect man to solve Liverpool’s issues.

It is no secret that the Belgian international is looking to leave the King Power having refused to sign new contract at the King Power. The Foxes are hence likely to be open to selling him for a cut-price fee in January to avoid losing him for free at the end of the campaign.

He would therefore provide Liverpool with a low-cost alternative and at just 25 years old could benefit massively from Klopp’s proven ability to develop players into the world’s best.

Douglas Luiz

Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for the Aston Villa star on deadline day as they sought to improve their midfield options but Liverpool were among the other clubs also touted with an interest. Given his contract situation, he could be available for a lower price than the £35m the Villans rejected on September 1st.

The Brazilian possesses good technical ability and is able to start attacking moves from a holding midfield position. He would help to provide the Reds with additional defence stability, something they have lacked this season.

Sander Berge

Perhaps more of a squad option, the Sheffield United star is regularly considered to be one of the top players in the Championship. At 6ft5 he would be expected to be someone who is possible of playing within a holding role. However, he has instead gained a reputation for being a progressive goalscoring midfielder.

He should be available for around £25m and would jump at the chance to sign for a club like Liverpool. Given the Reds’ struggles in producing goals from midfield, the Norwegian could offer a different option – something Klopp desperately needs as his side look to be bereft of ideas during their current poor run of form.

Konrad Laimer

The Austrian has been heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich when his contract expires at the end of the season but Liverpool could look to hijack the move by offering Leipzig money to avoid losing him for nothing.

The 25-year-old would be a solid, reliable option in the centre of the park, and he would offer Klopp value for this season and those to come. Laimer has the additional value of versatility, also being comfortable at right-back, meaning he can also serve as a capable deputy to the out-of-form Trent Alexander-Arnold.
