Former PM gunning for major rugby league role

Just months after being voted out of office, Australia’s former prime minister Scott Morrison is gunning for a role on the Australian Rugby League Commission.

According to Nine’ss Danny Weidler, Morrison, who is a Cronulla Sharks fan, has approached “prominent rugby league figures” in a bid to become a director of the game.

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys has not personally been approached but other commissioners have, according to Weidler.

“In the lead-up to Origin I, Scott Morrison was speaking to some powerbrokers in rugby league and he made it quite clear to them that he would like to be a part of the Australian Rugby League Commission,” Weidler told 9News.

“Now he won’t be able to do that straight away because there are no vacancies, but this is something that could happen in the future.

“I spoke to Peter V’landys, the chairman, today and asked him about it and he said he has not had a direct approach from Scott Morrison at this point. It’s going to be a case of watch this space.”

Morrison was voted out of office in May, his Liberal Party losing to Anthony Albanese’s Labour.

V’landys hosted both Morrison and Albanese in the NRL’s suite for the State of Origin series opener last month at Sydney’s Accor Stadium.
