Former Origin star signs for new NRL club

Moses Mbye was released by Wests Tigers with a season remaining on his contract on Tuesday, then confirmed a two-year deal with the Dragons.

Mbye, 28, has had a tough stint with the Tigers, in which he has never settled in a permanent position despite being on big money. He became a hindrance on the club’s salary cap, a fact that he openly acknowledged.

His departure for the Dragons will come at season’s end. Mbye has played 61 games for the Tigers to date, more than half of them as captain.

“On behalf of all at the club, I’d like to thank Moses for his efforts at Wests Tigers and extend our thanks to him for his service to the club,” Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said in a statement.

“In particular, I’d like to recognise Moses’ achievements as the 21st player to captain Wests Tigers and commend him on the way he carried himself, both on and off the field, while wearing the Wests Tigers jersey.

“Moses has shown himself to be a versatile and talented player right throughout his career and we wish him and his family all the very best for the future.”

Mbye, a Bulldogs star before joining the Tigers, has played 155 NRL games in total. He has also represented Queensland three times in State of Origin but faces the challenge of regaining his standing as a genuinely elite player.

Dragons general manager of football Ben Haran said: “Moses is a player we discussed in detail and while it has taken some time for the club to reach a position where we’re comfortable in recruiting him, we couldn’t be happier bringing in a player of his experience.

“Moses’ ability to play multiple positions was something we identified as needing in order to strengthen our roster.

“The character of Moses and the qualities he’ll bring to the Dragons next year will only be beneficial to the team environment.”
