Former Matildas boss lands new national team gig

Former Matildas boss Alen Stajcic is back in the world of international football, taking a job as the head of the Philippines national team.

PFF officials led by president Mariano Araneta, Jr., general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes, and PFF Women’s Committee Co-Chairperson and PWNT Manager Jefferson Cheng expressed confidence that Stajcic’s presence will improve the squad.

“We are thrilled that Alen Stajcic has accepted the position to be the head coach of the Philippine Women’s National Team head coach,” said Phillipines Football Federation president Mariano Araneta Jr.

“His appointment shows the commitment and determination of the PFF to give our women’s national team the best possible chance to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.”

The 47-year-old was at the helm of the Australian national team for six years before he was ousted in controversial circumstances by the FA.

He then took over A-League Men club Central Coast Mariners, but left when his contract expired at the end of the 2020-21 season.

“Coach Alen Stajcic has the capabilities to elevate the Philippine Women’s team on the Asian stage and beyond,” said PFF general secretary Edwin Gastanes.

“We look forward to what he can bring to the team which has qualified to the final competition of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022.”

The Philippines qualified for the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, after participating in the 2018 edition following a 15-year absence.

Currently, they’re ranked 68th in the world.
