Former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill reacts to Antonio Conte joining Tottenham
Cahill was a major part of Chelsea’s successes under Conte, which included a Premier League title and an FA Cup triumph.
Conte was sacked by Chelsea in 2018, before he joined Inter Milan, where he won the Serie A title in his second season with the club.
The 52-year-old left inter this summer and was announced as the new Spurs manager on Tuesday following the sacking of former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.
Cahill believes that Conte is a good appointment for the north London club, while also explaining what the Spurs players can expect from their new boss.
‘The guy’s successful. I have got a huge amount of respect for him. He was great with me in the time that I had with him,’ he told Sky Sports.
‘You just have to look at his record – when he was in Italy and what he did there and when he came to Chelsea and what he did there. So I think it’s a very good appointment for them [Tottenham].
‘He’s very intense, expects a lot in training, demands a lot from everybody. He’s very driven.
‘When he turned it into the kind of formation and shape and how we wanted to do things, he really put his stamp on the squad.
‘We went on to be very successful in that year and obviously, we won the title. The second year wasn’t as good in the league, but we won the FA Cup at the end of it.’
After winning his first game in charge against Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday night, Conte will be hoping to pick up another three points when Spurs travel to Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
