Girl dinner (noun): a new term to describe what women make themselves for dinner when alone. It is usually a platter of ‘picky bits’, such as deli meats, cheese, fruit, and salad, all beautifully arranged like an antipasti board.
But what about ‘boy dinner’?
Well, as you can probably guess, it’s the complete opposite – aside from meat featuring, naturally.
One TikTokker, Bryan Lee, posted a video explaining what a boy dinner is.
‘By now we’ve all seen what girl dinner is,’ he said.
‘Love it, respect it. If you’re wondering what boy dinner is, go to your local supermarket at 6.30pm and stand behind a single man and see what’s inside of his basket.
‘Frozen pizza, deli meats, potato chips, no vegetables.
‘One time I was behind a guy who was getting a family size block of butter, the generic brand of mac and cheese, not Kraft, and a bottle of drain cleaner.
‘Boy dinner? Or last meal on earth?’
The video got people talking – especially women commenting on the men in their lives. The men, however, were nowhere to be seen.
One person wrote: ‘I worked at a grocery store and 1lbs potato salad is also a popular choice.’
Another added: ‘One time I saw a guy in the supermarket around 6pm buying nothing but a packet of frankfurter sausages and a packet of chocolate biscuits.’
Someone else chimed in: ‘When I first moved in with my bf he would eat like a pound of chicken nuggets for dinner. no rice. no potatoes. Just a whole bag of chicken nuggets.’
‘Rotisserie chicken and beer is what I see in most baskets,’ was another common comment, for when men want to push the boat out.
Of course some men are excellent cooks – and as a women, I’m more likely to do a boy than girl meal, truth be told – but it seems a lot of them are still stuck in their student days.
Yes yes, this is all based around stereotypes and likely nonsense (shout out to the vegan men out there). But we all need a bit of silliness in our lives, after all.
