Ford’s firey start to 2022 confirmed

The Blue Oval is giving its red-hot trio of performance cars a much needed nip and tuck, and one feature in particular will have tongues wagging.

Ford is starting 2022 off with a bang.

The Blue Oval is updating its Fiesta ST and Focus ST hot hatches as well as introducing a new special-edition Mustang.

The new Mustang GT California Special is priced from $67,290 (before on-road costs) for a Fastback with a manual transmission. An auto gearbox adds $3000 and is $7700 as a convertible.

The California has a blacked out grille, lower body stripe and rear fender scoop, which Ford describes as a throwback to the original Mustang.

There is special California badging with several aerodynamic features including a large front splitter and a rear wing.

Retro-themed 19-inch alloy wheels and faux suede interior trim add to the car’s appeal.

All regular Mustangs will come with the line lock feature enabled, which is otherwise known as burnout mode. Ford says the line lock feature is for track use only, but there is nothing stopping it being used off track either.

The Focus ST small performance hatchback is getting fresh styling, including a larger grille, redesigned headlights and 10-spoke alloy wheels.

It also scores a gigantic 13.2-inch central touchscreen. There is wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with wireless charging.

The new FordPass Connect app allows owners to unlock and lock the car remotely, locate the vehicle and cool the vehicle before getting into it.

The Ford Focus ST range kicks off at $47,490 for the base versions, which is about $3000 more than this year’s model, and rises to $51,990 for the new more premium ST X version.

Ford’s little Fiesta ST pocket-rocket is also in line for a range of updates.

Prices start from $33,490 for the manual-only hatchback, which is a jump of a little over $1000 compared to the current edition.

The Fiesta ST gets a redesigned front end with a larger grille and new front splitter.

It’s feisty little 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine gets a performance boost with 320Nm up from 290Nm. Power remains at 147kW.

New performance seats are designed to hug the front passengers and are 12-way adjustable.

A new 12.3-inch touchscreen replaces an eight-inch unit. FordPass Connect and a wireless charging pad are standard.

The Fiesta ST arrives in showrooms in the first three months of the year and the Focus ST and Mustang arrive some time after March.
