Foo Fighters delight fans as they take to Glastonbury stage in surprise gig
As reported in Express.co.uk yesterday, the Foo Fighters have taken to the stage in Glastonbury for their biggest live performance since they played their tribute shows for drummer Taylor Hawkins.
There had been much speculation that the iconic American rockers would be filling the 6.10pm slot on The Pyramid stage.
The official line had a seemingly non-existent band called The Churnups listed as performing and the rumours turned out to be correct.
The group took to the stage to a rapturous reception and at one point they were joined by Dave Grohl’s daughter Violet.
She sang on the song Show Me How from their latest album But Here We Are, which was released at the beginning of the month.
She had already cut her teeth singing to a mammoth crowd at the two tribute concerts the band performed for late drummer Taylor Hawkins.
Therefore the 17-year-old was unfazed by the 100,000 people in the Glastonbury field, casually chewing gum as she joined her dad on stage.
Touchingly they also dedicated their smash hit fan favourite Everlong to Taylor, who died in March last year.
This was also the biggest gig to date for new drummer Josh Freese, as the band get set for a new tour which begins in Canada next month.
Josh is an industry veteran who played drums for Guns N’ Roses from 1997 to 2000 and who has also performed with Nine Inch Nails, Weezer and joined Paramore to name just a few.
The hour-long set included the hits Best Of You, The Pretender, Learn To Fly, and a few bars of the Beastie Boys’ Sabotage which the crowd lapped up.
They also performed a slow, stripped-back rendition of My Hero.
Singer Dave ended the set with a promise to the crowd saying: “If you come back, we’ll come back.”
The Foo Fighters themselves had stoked the rumours of their Glastonbury return with a cryptic Instagram post earlier this month, after The Churnups’ slot was posted.
Showing a photo of a handwritten letter from singer Dave Grohl, the post read: “It’s been a while…
“Now that we’ve returned from our first run of shows, I felt compelled to reach out and thank you all for being there for us.
“Every night, when I see you singing, it makes me sing harder. When I see you screaming, it makes me scream louder. When I see your tears, it brings me to tears. And when I see your joy, it brings me joy.
“But, I see you…and it feels good to see you, churning up these emotions together. Because we’ve always done this together. Time and time again. See you soon.”
